Phase 1

Before You Book

Read the cancellation policy
Check mileage limits (unlimited vs. capped)

Phase 2

At Pickup

Bring: license, credit card, reservation confirmation, proof of insurance

Check tire pressure and condition

Phase 3

During Your Rental

Keep all gas receipts

Phase 4

Returning the Car

Note the return time and mileage
Check for final charges on your credit card in the following days

Pro tip

Email your pickup photos to yourself immediately. Timestamps prove everything. If the rental company ever tries to blame you for pre-existing damage, those emailed photos are your best defense.
